Monster Mash is a Graveyard Smash
Monster Mash is a 1962 novelty song made famous by Bobby “Boris” Pickett. The musician and actor had a gift for impersonating horror film icon Boris Karloff. In the song, Bobby Picket also paid tribute to Bela Lugosi. As any self respecting horror fan knows, the lyric “Whatever happened to my Transylvania Twist?” is an homage to the legendary star of Dracula.
Halloween’s most popular novelty song features several low-budget sound effects that hold up well today. Creaky coffin sounds were made by pulling a rusty nail from a board. A bubbling cauldron sound was created by blowing into a glass of water with a straw. Rattling chains were simulated by dropping heavy chains on a tile floor.
Bobby Pickett’s novelty song was released both as a single and as part of a full-length album, The Original Monster Mash. The latter is a compilation of monster-themed tunes that are perfect for the Halloween season. Classic horror movie fans have kept the song a Halloween tradition for more than 50 years.

They Did the Mash …
It was a rocky road to stardom. The song was rejected by every major record label. Undaunted, producer Gary Paxton jumped in his car and distributed a thousand records to every radio station he could find. Bobby Pickett’s novelty tune hit number one in just eight weeks.
Elvis Presley was unimpressed with the surprise Halloween hit. The recording superstar thought it was the most ridiculous song he’d ever heard. Boris Karloff loved it!
