The King of Rock and Roll
Elvis Presley is one of the most significant icons in the pop culture arena. Indeed, he is remembered best as simply “The King.” Within a year of his first appearance on American television, 21-year-old Elvis Presley became one of the most famous people in the world. Christened “Elvis the Pelvis” after an appearance on The Milton Berle Show, the kid from Mississippi thrilled audiences with his gyrating hips and provocative dance moves.
Famed composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein called Elvis Presley “the greatest cultural force in the twentieth century.” Riots were commonplace at his live performances, where fevered crowds reacted to the first utterances of “You ain’t nothin’ but a Hound Dog.”
Elvis Presley’s first film Love Me Tender was released in 1957. From that point on, Elvis received top billing on each of the more than 30 films he starred in, including Blue Hawaii, Viva Las Vegas, and Harum Scarum. His leading ladies were some of the most beautiful and talented women in Hollywood, including Ann-Margret, Joan Blackman, Juliet Prowse, Shelley Fabares, Mary Tyler Moore, Donna Douglas, Carolyn Jones, Nancy Sinatra, and Dolores Hart.

Graceland is one of the most visited homes in America, where legions of fans come to embrace the memories and the music of the undying rock legend, Elvis Presley. I was delighted when I got the opportunity to paint the official 50th Anniversary portrait of Graceland. I set up my easel at Graceland on a crisp autumn morning when the stately home was particularly cozy and welcoming.

I was inspired to paint it with smoke curling from the chimney and a golden light blazing in every window. I finished my sketchy plein-air study in just a few hours, and then took Graceland, 50th Anniversary to my studio where I created an image that includes such finishing touches as a likeness of the King and one of his famous cars.
